Doda, April 12, KNT: Two consecutive earthquake tremors struck Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir during pre-dawn hours on Sunday, triggering panic among people who rushed out of their homes, officials said.
The first tremor, measuring 4.6 magnitude, was followed by another of 3.0 magnitude shortly afterward, according to initial seismic readings. The back-to-back shocks were felt across parts of the district, prompting people to gather in open spaces amid fear of further tremors.
There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property, officials said, adding that the situation remained under observation.
The tremors occurred during early morning hours when people were asleep, intensifying panic as people rushed outside in the dark. Eyewitnesses said many families stayed out for some time, fearing aftershocks.
Local authorities said teams were monitoring the situation and no distress calls indicating damage had been received so far. “No reports of any damage or injuries have come in,” an official said.
Locals described the tremors as brief but noticeable, with the initial shock prompting immediate movement out of homes. The second, lighter tremor reinforced concerns, leading to continued caution among locals.
Jammu and Kashmir falls in a seismically active zone, and mild to moderate tremors are not uncommon in the region. Authorities often advise residents to remain alert and follow safety protocols during such events. [KNT]
