Srinagar, March 1, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was adjourned twice on Friday following uproarious scenes as opposition members demanded a discussion on the execution of Afzal Guru.
Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with legislator Engineer Rashid and CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, pressed for an adjournment motion seeking debate on the issue and return of Guru’s mortal remains.
The disruption halted Assembly business for the day, reflecting the political sensitivity of the issue and divisions within the House over whether the matter should be taken up for discussion.
As proceedings began, opposition members stood up, raised slogans and demanded that the adjournment motion submitted earlier be admitted for debate.
National Conference leader Nasir Aslam Wani accused the PDP of politicizing the issue, saying the party had not raised concerns when Guru was alive.
PDP legislator Nizam-ud-Din Bhat countered that the matter required discussion in the House and should be debated to determine responsibility.
Amid the protests, Speaker Mubarak Gul adjourned the House for an hour. However, when the session resumed, similar scenes of disruption continued.
The Speaker later adjourned the Assembly for the day, stating that the decision on allowing the adjournment motion had been kept reserved and not rejected.
PDP legislators, led by Mehbooba Mufti, continued protests inside the House, insisting on a debate.
During the commotion, Engineer Rashid attempted to damage furniture in the well of the House but was stopped by marshals.
The Assembly failed to transact any business during the day as protests continued. [KNT]
