Pulwama, July 4, KNT: Unknown gunmen snatched a service pistol and 70 rounds of ammunition from a police officer near Pinglina in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district during the late hours of Wednesday, police said.
The officer was identified as Abdul Gani Bandh, a Sub-Inspector in Jammu and Kashmir Police and brother of PDP leader and MLA Pulwama Mohammad Khalil Bandh. He was also serving as the legislator’s Personal Security Officer (PSO).
According to police sources, the officer was intercepted by unidentified armed men near Pinglina. The gunmen allegedly held him at gunpoint and forced him to hand over his service pistol along with ammunition before fleeing from the spot.
Police sources said the assailants were believed to be two in number and were carrying sophisticated weapons, according to the statement given by the officer.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 179/2013 under Sections 292 and 341 RPC, and investigation has been initiated to identify and trace those involved in the weapon snatching incident.
Police have launched a search operation in the area to apprehend the accused. [KNT]
