Jammu, April 27, KNT: A man identified by police as Abhineet Singh, also known as “Nagi,” has died in hospital after being injured during an alleged encounter with police following a checkpoint breach in the Miran Sahib area of Jammu, officials said.
Police said Singh, described as a “hardcore criminal” and a notorious history-sheeter, was wanted in more than 13 FIRs related to charges including attempt to murder, rioting, and arms smuggling.
According to officials, a team from Miran Sahib police station had laid a checkpoint following specific intelligence inputs about Singh’s movement. He was riding a motorcycle along with an associate when they allegedly attempted to break through the naka.
When signaled to stop, Singh allegedly opened fire at the police party and tried to flee, officials said. During the chase, the motorcycle reportedly went out of control.
Police said they retaliated in self-defense and to prevent any harm to the public. The two accused then abandoned the motorcycle and escaped from the spot taking advantage of darkness.
A search operation was launched immediately. During the searches, Singh was later found injured inside a canal and was shifted to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
The second accused managed to escape, and efforts are underway to trace him, officials added. [KNT]
