Woman Critically Injured in Bear Attack While Collecting Mushrooms in Kupwara

Kupwara, May 5, KNT: A woman was critically injured after being attacked by a black bear in the forest area of Puthwari Nowgam, Lawoosa in Qalamabad area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Tuesday.

The injured has been identified as Hameeda Begum, 32, wife of Bashir Ahmad Kumar, a resident of Lawoosa.

According to initial reports, the woman was collecting wild mushrooms in a nearby forest when she was attacked by the bear, resulting in grievous injuries.

She was immediately shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara for treatment, where her condition is reported to be critical.

The incident highlights recurring instances of human-wildlife encounters in forested areas of north Kashmir, particularly during seasons when locals venture into forests for foraging. [KNT]
