Srinagar, March 10, KNT: The declining water level in the Jhelum River has raised concerns amid a rainfall deficit in Kashmir, Director Agriculture Kashmir Dr Sartaj Ahmad Shah said on Tuesday, while assuring farmers that alternative crops requiring less water remain available.

While talking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust, the Director Agriculture highlighted the impact of low precipitation on water resources while also stressing that farmers have viable crop options even if dry weather conditions persist.

Dr Sartaj Ahmad Shah said that precipitation levels this season have remained below normal, which has affected water availability in rivers and irrigation sources.

He said farmers should remain cautious while planning cultivation but there was no reason for panic.

“We have multiple crop options available that require less water such as maize, pulses and millets,” Dr Shah said.

He added that farmers can consider these alternatives if dry weather conditions continue and irrigation availability becomes limited.

“Farmers should not worry. We have ample options available, but we also hope that sufficient rainfall occurs in the coming weeks,” he said.

Dr Shah said rainfall and snowfall during the winter and early spring months play an important role in maintaining river flows and irrigation sources across the valley.

Director Agriculture said that the Jhelum River remains a key water source for irrigation across large parts of Kashmir Valley, particularly during the paddy cultivation season.

Any prolonged deficit in precipitation can affect water availability for agriculture, though crop diversification can help farmers adapt to changing weather conditions. [KNT]
