An oil tanker was struck at a major port in Dubai on Tuesday, triggering security concerns across key global shipping routes, officials and local media reports said.
The incident occurred at one of the emirate’s principal commercial ports, where emergency services were deployed following reports of damage to a tanker vessel and a brief fire onboard.
The development comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where recent attacks on shipping infrastructure have raised fears over the safety of oil supply routes critical to global energy markets.
Authorities in Dubai said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause and nature of the incident, though initial assessments pointed to a possible external strike.
“There was an incident involving a tanker vessel at the port. Emergency response teams acted swiftly and the situation has been brought under control,” a government statement said, without specifying the source of the attack.
Port operations continued with minimal disruption, officials said, adding that no major casualties were immediately reported.

Shipping industry sources said the tanker sustained visible damage, though its cargo status remained unclear.
Security analysts said the incident could further heighten risks in the region, particularly along routes linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes.
“This will increase insurance costs and may force shipping companies to reassess routes in the Gulf,” a maritime security expert said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and authorities have not confirmed whether the strike was carried out using drones, missiles or other means.
The incident follows a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the broader Middle East region in recent weeks, as geopolitical tensions have intensified.
Residents in nearby areas reported seeing smoke rising from the port briefly before it was contained.
“I saw flames and smoke for a short time, then emergency crews arrived quickly,” said a worker near the port area.
The United Arab Emirates has in recent years strengthened port security and surveillance systems, given its role as a major global logistics and energy hub.
The latest incident is expected to prompt increased maritime security coordination among regional and international stakeholders.
