Israel’s ambassador to Italy has sharply criticized an Italian magazine cover highlighting alleged abuse of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, calling it antisemitic and accusing the publication of distorting reality.

The controversy centers on the April 10 edition of L’Espresso, which featured a photograph of an armed Israeli individual in military-style attire confronting a Palestinian woman under the headline “Abuse,” alongside reports examining the expansion of Israeli settlements and their impact on Palestinian communities.

The dispute underscores broader tensions over media portrayal of the conflict, with competing narratives over violence, occupation, and journalistic representation.

Israel’s ambassador to Italy, Jonathan Peled, described the cover as “manipulative,” stating that it promotes stereotypes and fails to capture the complexity of the situation.

“The image distorts the complex reality with which Israel must coexist, promoting stereotypes and hatred,” he said, adding that journalism should remain balanced and fair.

The photograph was taken by Italian photojournalist Pietro Masturzo in the village of Idhna near Hebron during the 2025 olive harvest. According to Masturzo, a group of settlers accompanied by Israeli soldiers prevented Palestinians from harvesting olives, with the image capturing what he described as a moment of humiliation.

Masturzo defended the publication, saying the image reflects realities that are often ignored and forms part of a broader effort to document conditions faced by Palestinians under occupation.

The magazine’s report, based on testimonies from residents in areas such as the Jordan Valley, describes incidents involving alleged settler attacks, property damage, and control over resources, including water sources.

Online reactions to the ambassador’s remarks were divided, with some users supporting the criticism while others argued that the image reflects everyday realities on the ground.

The episode highlights ongoing international debate over reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly the role of media in documenting violence and shaping global perception.
