New Delhi, April 19, KNT: The Election Commission of India has directed strict action against misleading or unlawful social media content during ongoing elections, mandating that such material be acted upon within three hours of being reported.

In a press note issued on April 19, the Commission reiterated that all stakeholders must ensure responsible and ethical use of digital platforms in compliance with the Information Technology Act, 2000, IT Rules 2021, and the Model Code of Conduct.

The directive comes amid increasing concerns over the use of AI-generated and manipulated content in election campaigns, with the Commission requiring that such material be clearly labeled as “AI-Generated,” “Digitally Enhanced,” or “Synthetic Content.”

The move is aimed at maintaining transparency and safeguarding voter trust during the electoral process.

The Commission also said that social media content capable of disrupting law and order or spreading false narratives about the polling process is being closely monitored and acted upon by designated State IT nodal officers.

Election Commission Controversy | Allegations and Responses

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has, at times, faced allegations from opposition parties claiming that its actions or decisions have favored the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly during election periods.

These allegations have included concerns over the timing of elections, enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, handling of complaints, and perceived delays or inaction in addressing violations by political leaders.

Opposition leaders have also questioned decisions related to campaign restrictions, use of government machinery, and responses to controversial speeches or social media content.

The ECI, however, has consistently denied any bias, maintaining that it functions as an independent constitutional body and acts strictly in accordance with the law, established procedures, and available evidence.

The Commission has emphasized that all actions are taken through a defined institutional process involving multiple levels of scrutiny, and that it remains committed to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in the country.

According to the data shared, more than 11,000 social media posts and URLs have already been identified and acted upon since the announcement of elections on March 15, including content removal, FIRs, clarifications, and rebuttals.

The Commission reiterated provisions under Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which prohibit the display of election-related content in polling areas during the 48-hour silence period before voting concludes.

It also highlighted the role of the C-Vigil platform, through which citizens can report Model Code of Conduct violations. Between March 15 and April 19, over 3.23 lakh complaints were received, of which more than 96 percent were resolved within the stipulated time of 100 minutes.

The Commission said strict compliance by political parties, candidates, and media platforms is essential to ensure free and fair elections. [KNT]
