Bandipora, June 27, KNT: In a significant effort to revive the rich sporting heritage of the Gurez Valley, the Indian Army on Saturday organized a traditional horse polo event in Baktoor village near the Line of Control (LoC), bringing the centuries-old sport back to the region after nearly five decades.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, young players and polo enthusiasts, many of whom described the revival as the return of an important part of Gurez’s cultural identity.

Horse polo was once a popular sport across the valley but gradually disappeared over the years owing to changing circumstances and the absence of organised events. Saturday’s revival rekindled memories of a tradition that had long remained confined to the recollections of older generations.

Army officials said the initiative was aimed at preserving the region’s traditional sporting culture while encouraging youth participation and strengthening community engagement in the remote border area.

They said such initiatives help young people reconnect with their cultural roots, promote sportsmanship and create opportunities for positive interaction between local communities and the Army.

Locals expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying the revival of horse polo had generated renewed interest among the younger generation and revived hopes that the sport would once again become a regular feature of Gurez’s cultural and sporting calendar. [KNT]
