Jammu, March 9, KNT: Students of the University of Jammu on Monday addressed a press conference demanding the removal of the Urdu word “Jammuiyat” from the title of an upcoming programme, Sahitya–Sanskriti Samagam, saying the term does not represent the cultural and historical identity of Jammu Province.
The students urged the concerned authorities to reconsider the title of the event, stating that cultural programmes organised in the region should reflect what they described as the authentic heritage and identity of Jammu.
The press conference was addressed by a group of students who said the inclusion of the term “Jammuiyat” in the programme title had raised concerns among sections of the student community.
They said the objective of their appeal was to seek a review of the title so that it accurately reflects the historical and cultural context of Jammu Province.
Ketan, an LLM scholar at the Department of Law, University of Jammu, said the cultural heritage of Jammu should be represented in a manner that is historically accurate.
“The cultural heritage of Jammu should be represented in an authentic and historically accurate manner,” Ketan said while addressing the media.
The students said they respect cultural diversity but believe that the terminology used in official or institutional programmes should appropriately reflect regional identity and traditions.
They urged the organizers and concerned authorities to reconsider the wording of the programme title and engage with students and scholars on the issue.
The students expressed hope that their concerns would be taken into account and that the matter would be addressed through dialogue. [KNT]
