Iran Launches Retaliatory Strikes, Gulf Tensions Push Oil Toward $100

Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply on Tuesday after Iran claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks targeting U.S.-linked military facilities in the Gulf, a move that has intensified fears of a wider regional confrontation and sent oil prices surging.

The strikes were presented by Tehran as retaliation for recent U.S. military action against Iranian positions, marking one of the most significant escalations between the two countries in recent years.

According to Iranian state media, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a coordinated operation targeting facilities associated with American military presence in the Gulf region, including installations linked to the U.S. Fifth Fleet and a strategic airbase.

Regional and Western media reports indicated that several incoming missiles and drones were intercepted before reaching their intended targets, while Gulf countries heightened security measures amid concerns of further escalation.

The latest developments come against the backdrop of weeks of rising tensions involving military exchanges, diplomatic breakdowns and disputes over maritime security in the Gulf.

Reports also suggested that U.S. forces carried out retaliatory action against Iranian military infrastructure following the attacks, further raising the risk of a prolonged cycle of confrontation.

The crisis has drawn international attention because of its potential impact on global energy supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, carrying a substantial portion of globally traded crude oil and liquefied natural gas.

As news of the escalation spread, oil markets reacted immediately.

Brent crude prices climbed sharply and moved closer to the $100-per-barrel mark amid fears that continued instability could disrupt shipping routes and energy supplies from the Gulf region.

Analysts warned that prolonged tensions could trigger broader economic consequences, including higher fuel prices, inflationary pressure and supply chain disruptions affecting countries far beyond the Middle East.

World powers have meanwhile called for restraint, with diplomatic efforts continuing behind the scenes to prevent the crisis from expanding into a larger regional conflict.

The latest exchange underscores the fragile security situation in the Gulf, where military confrontation and diplomacy continue to unfold simultaneously, keeping governments, energy markets and international observers on edge.
