Baramulla, March 17, KNT: A joint rescue operation was launched in Uri area of Baramulla district after a woman reportedly jumped into the Jhelum river, while a Navy MARCOS commando sustained critical injuries during the search effort, officials said.
The middle-aged woman, identified as a resident of Lagama Uri, is reported to have jumped into the river from a wooden footbridge at Chandanwari in Uri.
The incident triggered an immediate search operation by teams of SDRF Baramulla and Civil Defence Unit Uri.
Officials said the rescue operation was resumed on Tuesday with additional reinforcement, including personnel from the Navy’s MARCOS unit.
MARCOS (Marine Commandos) is the special forces unit of the Indian Navy, trained to conduct high-risk operations in maritime and riverine environments. Known for their elite combat skills, MARCOS personnel are deployed in counter-terrorism, anti-piracy, hostage rescue and special reconnaissance missions. They are among the most highly trained commandos in India, capable of operating in sea, air and land conditions. In addition to combat roles, MARCOS are often involved in rescue and emergency operations in difficult terrains, including rivers and coastal areas.
During the search operation, one of the MARCOS personnel slipped into the river Jhelum and was swept by the current for several minutes before being pulled out by fellow team members.
The commando, identified as A.S Badoria, sustained critical injuries during the incident and was initially unconscious when rescued, officials said.
He was immediately shifted to Army Hospital Boniyar for medical treatment.
The condition of the injured personnel was reported to be critical, officials added.
