Rangreth, April 15, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said the government will introduce a new industrial policy aimed at benefiting both existing unit holders and prospective entrepreneurs in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing a shift from earlier approaches that did not yield desired results.

Speaking to reporters at Rangreth Industrial Estate in Srinagar outskirts, Abdullah said the upcoming policy would be framed after consulting stakeholders currently running industrial units as well as those planning to establish new ventures.

“The policy will live up to the expectations of those who already run units and those who want to set up units,” he said, indicating that the government intends to align policy design with ground-level realities.

The Chief Minister as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust acknowledged that previous industrial policies, which largely relied on incentives, did not produce the intended outcomes. “Earlier we used to provide incentives but that didn’t yield any result,” he said.

He said the government will now directly engage with stakeholders to understand their experiences and requirements. Existing unit holders will be asked to share operational challenges and suggest changes, while prospective entrepreneurs will be invited to outline their expectations from the policy framework.

Abdullah said this combined input would help the Department of Industries and Commerce formulate a more effective and responsive industrial policy tailored to the region’s needs.

“The mixture will help the Department of Industries and Commerce to create a good industrial policy in Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.

The announcement signals a shift toward a more consultative and feedback-driven approach in industrial planning, with authorities seeking to address gaps identified in earlier policy frameworks. [KNT]
