Harassment of Kashmiri Students Reported from India’s Andhra College
Srinagar, Feb 27, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has written to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu seeking urgent intervention over alleged harassment and discrimination faced by Kashmiri students at the Government College of Nursing in Kurnool.
In its representation, the Association claimed that nearly two dozen Kashmiri students pursuing BSc Nursing at the college have complained of verbal abuse, denial of Sehri and Iftar arrangements during Ramzan, and pressure regarding wearing of hijab. The students are reportedly enrolled under the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme through AICTE counselling.
JKSA alleged that the students were questioned about observing Ramzan and were denied permission to arrange meals from outside when requests for Sehri and Iftar facilities were allegedly not accommodated. The Association further claimed that some students were discouraged from fasting and asked to remove their hijab, terming the actions a violation of fundamental rights.
The representation also alleged instances of verbal abuse and targeting based on regional identity. JKSA said the reported incidents have caused fear and mental distress among students, affecting their academic environment.
Citing constitutional provisions including Articles 15 and 25, the Association has sought a time-bound inquiry, protection for students from any retaliatory action, and facilitation of Ramzan arrangements within the campus. [KNT]
