Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Questions Police Presence Outside His ICU
New Delhi, July 25, KNT: Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has questioned the heavy police presence at Medanta Hospital, alleging that access to her husband in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is being controlled despite a court reportedly clarifying that he is not under detention.
In a post on X, Angmo claimed that police personnel were stationed at multiple locations inside the hospital, including the main gate, reception area, lifts and outside Wangchuk’s ICU, deciding who could meet him. She said a similar security arrangement had earlier been in place at Safdarjung Hospital.
“If the Court has clarified that he is not under detention, then under what authority is this happening?” she asked, questioning the legal basis for the restrictions.
Angmo also raised broader concerns over the role of law enforcement in a democratic society, stating that every Indian should ask whether the police are meant to protect citizens and uphold the law or to control citizens on behalf of those in power. [KNT]
