United States forces have struck Iranian coastal surveillance radar installations near the Strait of Hormuz after intercepting and shooting down four Iranian drones that Washington said posed a threat to regional maritime traffic, according to international news agencies.

The latest confrontation marks a significant escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran around one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors.

According to Reuters, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces intercepted four Iranian drones after determining that they posed an imminent threat to commercial and regional maritime traffic operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Following the interceptions, U.S. forces carried out strikes against Iranian coastal surveillance radar facilities located at Goruk and on Qeshm Island. Reuters reported that the military action was intended to degrade Iran’s ability to support further attacks against maritime assets in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, with a significant portion of the world’s oil exports passing through the narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf with international markets.

Foreign news agencies reported that the U.S. military described the operation as a defensive action designed to protect freedom of navigation and ensure the safety of commercial shipping.

The developments come amid heightened regional tensions and a series of military exchanges involving U.S. and Iranian interests across the Middle East. Analysts cited by international media warned that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could have far-reaching implications for global energy markets and regional security.

Iranian authorities have not immediately provided a detailed public account matching the U.S. version of events, while state-linked media outlets in Iran reported heightened military activity in the Gulf region.

The incident is likely to intensify international concerns over the possibility of a broader confrontation in the Middle East, particularly as maritime security in the Gulf remains under close global scrutiny.

Reuters and other international agencies said the situation remains fluid, with regional and international stakeholders closely monitoring developments in and around the Strait of Hormuz. [KNT]
