Chidambaram Terms Article 370 Abrogation ‘Constitutional Outrage’, Questions Delay in Restoring Statehood
New Delhi, August 5, KNT: Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance and Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday renewed his party’s criticism of the 2019 reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir, describing the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories as a “constitutional outrage.”
Marking the anniversary of the August 5, 2019 constitutional changes, Chidambaram questioned the delay in restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the issue remained unresolved despite the Centre’s assurance before the Supreme Court that statehood would be restored.
In a statement posted on social media, the Congress veteran argued that a key constitutional question relating to the conversion of a state into Union Territories had not been conclusively addressed and said the government’s commitment on restoring statehood must now be honoured.
Chidambaram’s remarks came amid nationwide political debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status, with several opposition parties reiterating their demand for the restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory. [KNT]
