Iran has warned of retaliation after a US naval action against an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman, further escalating tensions as fragile ceasefire negotiations hang in uncertainty.
According to Iranian state media, the US Navy fired on and seized the vessel for allegedly defying a blockade, prompting a sharp response from Tehran’s military, which said it would respond to the incident.
The development comes at a sensitive time as diplomatic efforts continue, with US Vice President JD Vance and senior officials expected to travel to Pakistan for another round of talks on the ongoing conflict.
However, Iran has not publicly confirmed its participation, and some Iranian media reports have suggested the talks may not take place.
The ceasefire between the two sides, already marked by mutual allegations of violations, is set to expire on Wednesday, adding urgency to the negotiations.
The talks are expected to focus on key unresolved issues, including control over Iran’s uranium stockpiles and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route that has faced disruptions in recent weeks.
The seizure incident has added a new layer of complexity to the negotiations, raising concerns over further escalation in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the standoff, with continued uncertainty affecting global energy markets and shipping routes.
Officials from both sides have yet to signal any breakthrough, as tensions continue to rise ahead of the ceasefire deadline. [KNT]
