Srinagar, June 21, KNT: Residents of Meerak Shah Colony in Zakoora on the outskirts of Srinagar have expressed concern over non-functional streetlights in the area, alleging that the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has failed to address the issue despite repeated representations.

The issue has assumed significance during the ongoing holy month of Muharram, when religious gatherings and the movement of mourners continue well into the evening. Residents say inadequate street lighting is causing inconvenience and raising safety concerns for pedestrians, commuters and participants in Muharram-related activities.

Locals alleged that several streetlights in the Shia-majority locality have remained defunct for an extended period, leaving stretches of roads and lanes shrouded in darkness after sunset.

“We repeatedly brought the matter to the notice of the concerned authorities, but no concrete action has been taken so far,” a resident said.

Locals said the absence of proper illumination has made movement difficult during the night and urged the authorities to take immediate steps to restore the lights.

They appealed to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and other concerned departments to address the issue on priority and ensure that the locality does not remain neglected during the religious observances.

Officials from the concerned departments could not be immediately reached for comment. [KNT]
